Failure Modes Effects Analysis (FMEA)

A pro-active method of predicting faults and failures so that preventive action can be taken.

 


Fast mover

A product delivered or used in production with a highfrequency or in relatively large numbers per period.

 


First In, First Out (FIFO)

Warehouse term meaning first items stored are first used.

 


 


Fixed costs

Costs, which do not fluctuate with business volume in the short run.


 

 

Fixed order quantity

A batch-sizing technique in MRP or inventory management that will always cause planned or actual orders tobe generated for a predetermined fixed quantity in MRP,or multiples thereof if net requirements for the periodexceed the fixed order quantity.
  

 

 

Flexibility

 

Ability to respond quickly and efficiently to changing customer and consumer demands.       

 

 

 


Flow chart

A graphical representation of a procedure or sequenceof events, usually using symbols connected by flowlines.

 

 

FOB (Free On Board)

Contractual terms between a buyer and a seller, which define where, title transfer takes place.

 
 

 

 

Five whys (Japanese Hadome)

The practice of asking “Why” repeatedly whenever a problem is encountered in order to get beyond the obvious symptoms to discover the root cause.

  

 


 


Five S

Five related terms, beginning with an S sound, describing workplace practices conducive to visual control and lean production. The five terms in Japanese are:
1. Seiri: Separate needed from unneeded items-tools, parts, materials, paperwork-and discard the unneeded.
2. Seiton: Neatly arrange what is left-a place for everything and everything in its place.
3. Seiso: Clean and wash.
4. Seiketsu: Cleanliness resulting from regular performance of the first three Ss.
5. Shitsuke: Discipline, to perform the first four Ss.

 

 

Forecast

A formal statement established on basis of calculations about future situations and/or the expected trend offuture events.

 

 

 


Fork lift truck

Fourth-Party Logistics (4PL)

Differs from third party logistics in the following ways; / 4PL organization is often a separate entity established as a joint venture or long-term contract between a primary client and one or more partners/ 4PL organization acts as a single interface between the client and multiple logistics service providers/ All aspects (ideally) of the client’s supply chain are managed by the 4PL organization./
  
 

 

Frozen zone

Period in which no changes can be made to scheduled work orders based on changes in demand.
