Back orderProduct ordered but out of stock and promised to ship when the product becomes available

The return movement of a vehicle from its original destination to its original point of origin, especially when carrying goods back over all or part of the same route.

Balanced ScorecardA structured measurement system based on a mix of financial and non financial measures of business performance.

|
BarcodeA symbol consisting of a series of printed bars representing values. A system of optical character reading, scanning, and tracking units by reading a series of printed bars for translation into a numeric or alphanumeric identification code.

Batch/LotA definite quantity of a product or a component that is treated and identified as one entity with respect to certain operations e.g. handling, processing, purchasing, production, transport. |

Batch production The production process where products/components are produced in batches and where each separate batch consists of a number of the same products/components.

The process of comparing performance against the practise of other leading companies for the purpose of improving performance. Companies also benchmark internally by tracking and comparing current performance with past performance.

Bin location record/Bin location fileA record that specifically identifies the physical locationwhere each item in inventory is stored.

Warehouse approved by the Treasury Department and under bond/guarantee for observance of revenue laws. Used for storing goods until duty is paid or goods are released in some other proper manner.

BottleneckA facility, function, department, etc., that impedes:
- Production, e.g. a machine or work centre where jobs arrive at a faster rate than they can be completed.
- Performance, e.g. a warehouse or distribution centre where goods arrive at a faster rate than they can be transported or stored, thus causing stock-piling at improper moments or in unwanted areas. |
